How to Protect Yourself from Negative Energy
There are different degrees of negativity, aka bad vibes. An offhand remark from someone who’s having a bad day is small potatoes — It’s pretty easy to brush off.
For little things like that, don’t let it get to you. When negativity comes at you, you don’t need to feed into it. If you don’t fan the flame, it blows out, and won’t spread to anyone else.
And then, there are the more serious negative energies — people who lack compassion and wish to do harm to others, people completely out of sync with their hearts. This kind of negativity might not be as noticeable at first, or you might not notice it making an effect on you.
Or maybe, you’re forced to be around Drama Queens, Debbie Downers and Negative Nancies every day and it’s starting to bug you.
Staying positive in the face of negativity, and keeping your vibrations high can be a struggle!
“If you can’t find the light, BE the light.”
Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to protect your aura from any nasty vibes. Negative remarks and glares can just bounce right off of you, if you know how to protect yourself.
The first thing you need to do, is clear out any existing bad vibes that you might have picked up — anxiety, irritability, moodiness and feeling “blah” are all signs that negativity has taken an effect on you.
Clean yourself and your surroundings on the physical level first. Tidy up your space. Take a relaxing shower, or wash your hands and splash your face if that’s all you can do at the moment. Even better — fill your bathtub, sprinkle in some sea salt, and have a nice soak.
To clean up the spiritual clutter and ickiness, light some incense (sage, palo santo, frankincense or cedar) and wave the smoke towards you from your feet up to your head. This helps cleanse your aura. If you’re allergic to smoke, you can use an oil burner and burn them in their essential oil form, and sit close by the burning oil.
The best way to do this is to go outside in your bare feet, and let the bottoms of your feet come in total contact with the earth. You don’t necessarily have to be barefoot, it just helps to absorb the positive energies from the earth itself.
You can also lie down on the ground for a bit on a blanket, meditate outside or go for a walk. Embrace the whole “tree-hugger” stereotype, and actually hug a tree! It shouldn’t feel silly at all, because trees naturally have happy, positive vibrations.
Nature is full of negative ions, (not to be confused with negative energy!) especially around flowing water. Go to a river or waterfall and take some deep breaths. You will soon feel a lot lighter and more energetic!
Some stones and crystals are natural guardians.
Black Obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian, Apache Tears, Selenite (cleansing), Labradorite, Onyx, Jet, Black Tourmaline, Infinite, Spirit Quartz and Tourmalinated Quartz are the big ones.
You can wear them on jewelry, or just carry one around in your pocket to keep it close. Not only will crystals keep away the bad stuff, but they will also help heal you on various levels. For example, Snowflake Obsidian will remove negativity from a space or a person, but it will also help you work through inner issues that might be bothering you.
Ringing a little bell or just having wind chimes in your yard brings a feeling of peace. Their high frequency noise irons out the energy in the room, causing it to flow smoothly.
Many cultures down through the ages have used bells to “chase away evil”. The Japanese art of Feng Shui describes the bell’s effects perfectly: it brings the negative energy into balance and creates a harmonious flow of energy.
Obviously, you might not always have access to a bell… unless you wear one! You can find tiny bells on necklaces or bracelets, and whenever you move, it jingles. 🙂
It’s easier said than done, right?
Yeah, but smiling, laughing, singing, dancing… even just saying positive words and phrases is often enough to chase away the bad vibes.
Positivity breeds positivity! Keep a list nearingby of things that make you smile. Whenever you feel affected by negative energy, take it out and read it. Keep positive words on pictures in your house. Get a whiteboard and write positive messages to yourself.
The more you build yourself and others up, the bigger the love will grow, and there will be no room for bad vibes. ☮+💜
P.S.: I wanted to add that “staying positive” can be very very hard, if not impossible if you have a mental illness. In my experience, it wasn’t until I had my anxiety and depression under control with medication that I was able to really start growing emotionally. Everyone is different, though. I encourage anyone struggling to see a doctor and seek any healing they can.
